I get bruises on my thigh from my irons. You know, when you take a full iron shot and on the follow through the club comes around over your shoulder and back? It frequently bangs into the outside of my right thigh. It doesn’t really hurt at the time but I always end up with bruises there. The shots are good, but I must be doing something wrong. We can’t be meant to hurt ourselves like that, right? Am I the only one?

Okay, smart aleck – then what do you suppose I’m doing wrong? Other than hitting myself with my golf club? Any suggestions how to correct it?

You could go all Arnold Palmer and lash the club up in the air in a helicopter move. Or, you could practice shortening your follow through, much the many people shorten their back swing for more control. Just the way you keep your left arm relatively straight on the back swing, if you keep your right arm relatively straight on the follow through, you can’t hit yourself. If you’re a lefty, reverse all that.

Ohhhh, is that what that mysterious bruising is from? This whole time I thought it was something else entirely.
perhaps you should wrap your leg, if not your whole body in Charmin…remember those commercials?

I laughed at first, but realized you were serious. Maybe try some biking short with padding. I would not mess my good shoots with a swing change.

Your wrists are way too loose, and you are probably arching your back too much at the end also – that’s the only way the club could make it that far back around. A follow-through is one thing, an uncontrolled one is another. Just my 1.5 cents …

Probably not the ONLY one…but pretty darn close.
Try watching the pros in their finish position. Most finish with their left arm bent in pretty much a 90 degree angle with the shaft close to parallel to the ground. (I’m swinging a club and I can’t get close to my right thigh with an iron)
Oh – and WELCOME BACK !!!!!!!
