Annika Sorenstam : Classy as Michelle Wie : Brassy

The ever astute golf chick Stina Sternberg put up a great post over at the Golf For Women’s Editor’s blogs about Annika declining a spot at the Samsung World Championship while Michelle Wie accepted one. I agree with her wholeheartedly and I couldn’t have said it better myself. I only add that Michelle puts the “I” in We (because I think I’m so clever).

Here’s a taste:

So let’s recap: the best player in the history of women’s golf decides to sit out a limited-field tournament to allow a higher-ranked player to take her place. And a college student with a season-best T-69–who’s not even a member of the tour nor has any plans to become one–decides to play despite taking a spot from a player of Natalie Gulbis’ caliber. It’s flat-out embarrassing, both for the Wie camp and Samsung. Sorenstam, on the other hand, just looks classier every minute.

Michelle Wie and Cindy Crawford

Michelle Wie – 17, lovely and set for life, she still has a lot to learn.
Yes, that’s Cindy Crawford.

Golf Annika's Way book cover

Annika literally wrote the book on how to play (and win) like a pro.
This should be on Wie’s required reading list at Stanford.

Golf Girl TV premieres

The golf girl has launched a new feature (and website) called Golf Girl TV.

You know golf girl, she’s sexy Patricia, the “fun, flirty, fashionable” golf blogger. As opposed to yours truly, with my decidedly more feminist, flop-shot, f#%k-em type style.

golf girl tv

She’s done a pretty good job for her first video effort and I know they’ll keep getting better. It’s nice to see her in action and I look forward to the weekly episodes. You can see the videos on her blog site or on the new Golf Girl TV site.

I corresponded with her quite awhile ago about a video I wanted to produce that included some footage of her. I dropped the ball and never did it and now she’s off and running. Soon I’ll probably have to pay her to participate! Congratulations to Patricia on her foray into the video world. I hope to be producing some more videos of my own, only not necessarily in a golfchick tv kind of way. Meanwhile, you can see one of my videos here. I know it’s a year old but like I said, I hope to do some more soon. Trust me, I have lots of ideas and footage. Stay tuned.

Update: I was informed that Patricia’s links weren’t working so I checked it out and lo and behold the title of the post had been changed. The links should work now. I have also been informed that I indeed possess the other “f” word qualities as well. I’ll cop to being fun, I guess. :)

Natalie Gulbis blogs from the Solheim Cup

Want a behind the scenes glimpse into what it’s like for the players of the Solheim Cup? Check out Natalie’s blog.

Natalie Gulbis and her mom at the Solheim Cup

Natalie and her mom. Photo taken by Morgan Pressel.

In addition to discussing the golf course and the play, she talks about fun details like:

  • getting dolled up for the festive events
  • the “cute outfits” they got and what they’re wearing on the course
  • fire alarms
  • jet lag
  • learning a new bunker shot (really?)
  • preparing for cold weather
  • practicing with teammate’s brand of golf balls to get a feel for them (as well as how the pairings might be based on how they play with certain golf balls)
  • the gifts they’re receiving from the captains and players
  • room decorations … and more

It’s a really fun read and so far she has posted every day this week. I hope she continues the pace and keeps us up to speed throughout the competition.

Each player was given a Canon Powershot camera and they’re all taking their own photos, which are being posted on the LPGA website as well as at the Golf Channel site. Here’s a shot of Morgan Pressel’s room:

Now we can add blogger to the list of all things Natalie. Thanks, Nat!

Stina Sternberg is also on location at the Solheim Cup and is blogging on it over at Golf For Women.

The Solheim Cup coverage doesn’t come on here until 11 PM, but of course I’ll be Tivo-ing it and keeping up with the tournament as well as watching how the Tour Championship/FedEx Cup final plays out.

Thanks to Golfgal for the heads up on Natalie’s blog!

Every day starts a new year.

This might be a difficult one (the resolution, not the year). Bear with me.

Aces, Alice Cooper and reader question answered

Back when I first started this blog (June 2005), Jennifer Mario was really the only active female golf blogging voice out there. Musey was around but not very active. Recently, Jen has been busy working on other projects, like her book about Michelle Wie, and her blog posts have been dwindling away. I really enjoy her writing and I wish her feed would light up with fresh material more often. The infrequency of her posts leaves me hanging on every word when she finally does write one. Her entry this month was no exception.

See, Jen and her family went to Hawaii where she not only rubbed elbows with Alice Cooper (might want to wash that elbow, Jen), she recorded her first hole-in-one! Huge congrats to her on that!

In our subsequent comment exchange, she mentioned my two aces which got me thinking about a reader question I had awhile back. I forget the reader’s name – he asked me instead of The Goose so he received an email response instead of a blog post.

hole in one

The question was something about whether in tournament play if someone gets a hole-in-one, do they also win the “closest to the pin” prize? My answer: Yeah, you can’t really get any closer to the pin than that.

I actually saw that happen in one of our club’s tournaments. A guy made an ace, won the $50 KP (why do they call it KP instead of CP for closest to the pin?) and also won $100 which our club gives to anyone who makes a hole-in-one. As many people know, it is customary for anyone making a hole-in-one to buy drinks for all at the clubhouse afterwards. This guy honored that tradition and his bar tab exceeded his prize earnings by over $100. People joked that if it hadn’t been his first ace, he might have been tempted to pull the ball out of the hole, place it an inch away and just get out of there with his $50. After all, we’re a club that was founded at and sponsored by a bar! He knew it wouldn’t be cheap!

A tip from my favorite caddie

Jamboy logoProbably my favorite golf blog to read is The Reluctant Jam Boy. No filler posts, no reviews, no gratuitous keyword whoring, just good stories from his life as a caddie. Tom’s writing is funny, clever and entertaining and I truly enjoy every single post.

His last two posts are of his experiences caddying for Ian Baker-Finch and the CEO of Ritz-Carlton and then meeting Mr. Baker-Finch at the CBS Tower at Tiger Woods’ tournament at The Congressional. With his new promotion to caddie master and the stellar job he did as IBF’s caddie, it looks like he’s going to be the new caddie master at the new private Jack Nicklaus course where it took place. Congratulations and best of luck, Tom! Just please don’t go getting all professional on us, stop smoking rocks and start taming down your writing.

The first of those two IBF posts was 22 pages long! Of course, it seemed like 4.5 pages because the first page seemed like 1/4 page, then the next five pages started seeming like 1/2 page then they blended into the next 10 pages which seemed like 2 pages then the next page was really on its own so that just seemed like a page and the rest of the 5 pages only seemed like 1.25 pages. You’ll have to read it to understand. It’ll only take a minute. You might even find your “special purpose.”

So what’s the tip?

Anyway, within one of those pages I found a brilliant little nugget I just have to share. He talked about being sure to put bug spray on the brim of his hat! I can’t believe I’m such an imbecile that I never thought of that. Actually, yes I can.

bug smear hat

I couldn’t really get a clear photo of it no matter what lighting/flash combination I used and this is the best I got. For some reason, little bugs like to fly up under the brim of my hat and land there. Then I go to swat them away and inevitably end up with a smear like this I’m stuck staring at for the rest of the round, distracting me from my game.

Bug spray on a hat – duh! Thanks, Jam Boy – I owe you a tip.

The Golfchick Chronicles are back

When I was on blogger, I had a feature called the “Golfchick Chronicles,” so people could read my entire blog starting with the very first post. Yep, people actually do it. Since I moved to this domain and my new host, I’ve had that feature disabled because it relies on permalinks within every post that link to the next sequential post. It was a hassle to get them all switched over, but it’s finally done, so the feature is back and listed in my right sidebar column.

Phew! I deserve a(nother) margarita. Oh yeah, that was a lot of tedium so if I glazed over and messed up on any of them and you happen to notice, please let me know! And I apologize if your feed readers went bananas as I updated them all.

The U.S. Senior Open that doesn’t exist

Stuart over at the Waggle Room alerted me to a terrible injustice in the golf world. I guess I already knew at some level but I’m not sure why it wasn’t more clear on my radar.

The U.S. Senior Open is now taking place at Whistling Straits, with Allen Doyle trying to become the second three-time winner and first to win the tournament three years in a row.

The Senior Open is one of 15 national championships run by the United States Golf Association (not counting the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup). Every one of those championships is played twice – once for the men (the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Senior Amateur, for example) and once for the women (U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Women’s Amateur, U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur).

Every one of those championships except one. Because while the 50-and-over guys get their Open championship this week, there is no U.S. Senior Women’s Open. And that’s really inexcusable. It’s well past time for the USGA to add a Women’s Senior Open.

Check out his full post in which he lists some players he knows would be playing if they held such an event based on his own communications with some of them.

I know I’d love to see such a tournament. Do they think people wouldn’t watch and that they couldn’t get sponsors and advertisers?

The one thing his post doesn’t have is a call to action. He ends the post by simply stating that the USGA needs to “get off its duff” and add the championship to its playlist. Maybe if we all emailed the USGA with our desire to watch those legendary golf chicks battle it out, they’d get the picture. And if you’re a potential sponsor, you know what to do.

Update: Stuart added a link for you use if you want to write that letter.

Another update: Sarah at The Daily Mulligan wrote a letter to the USGA you can copy and paste.

Julieta Granada blogs

Julieta Granada, who won last year’s ADT championship and set an LPGA record for a $1 million first place check, is currently T2 (at -1) at the weather-delayed U.S. Open at Pine Needles. But did you know she is also a blogger?

Julieta Granada bio

Already this season, she’s had two top 10 finishes and earned over $250K. You’d think she’d be too busy or have better things to do than blog. But no. This sweet young player from Paraguay has agreed to blog about her preparation and time leading up to the HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship (July 19-22 at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, NY).

Originally, HSBC thought it would be too much to ask of a golfer and set their sights on getting a caddy to blog about their pro’s preparation. Understandably, they are thrilled to have Julieta, a “self-proclaimed computer addict,” according to James Gregson, and anticipate at least 10 posts from her in the month leading up to the event. I just checked her blog and she posted from Pine Needles before play began. She discusses her preparation, her off time (including her family and her dog, Bimba) and much more. Her writing is as charming as she is and it’s so great to see regular updates and insights from an LPGA professional. Kudos to HSBC for this great score!

Comments are enabled, so she might even reply if you want to communicate with this superstar of a golf chick. Great job, Julieta! And good luck!
