2014 Masters Pin Flag Prize Winner

We have a winner! No, I’m not talking about Gerald Lester Watson. I’m talking about the winner of our 2014 embroidered Masters pin flag giveaway contest.

Thanks to everyone who took time to enter the contest. I had fun reading everyone’s entries.

Choosing the winner was a difficult decision. I mean, Morris Wormell wrote an incredible and LONG piece of fiction. Some people thought he should just win probably based on length alone. If I thought he wrote it just for this blog, I think we’d have HAD to choose him.

Then there was Courtney, who had my FAVORITE comment, which was simply “Stupid Bubba.”  Unfortunately, that was entered after the tournament was over, so was ineligible.

And Janis, who was an early entry with a brilliant kiss ass comment – Janis, you almost had me, but I was looking for something more Masters related. I did enjoy your post tournament comment, too. :)

AND THE WINNER IS………………… SEAN, from Ottawa. Congrats, Sean @hugegolfhacker!

Sean wrote:

“I have been trying for many years to get tics for the masters and no luck. I would loveto go. Actually why am i even bothering typing more after seeing Morris’ post above. That breaks a record for longest internet post that I have ever seen! Just give him the flag, unless he was rude in his post (too long for me to read). Would love to see Bubba watson choke today, dont like the way he treats his caddie. Thx”

We chose Sean because he seems like a big Masters fan, generous (wanted someone else to win), anti-troll, and kind to Ted Scotts. :) Way to go, Sean! Enjoy your Masters flag, and please feel free to post a pic on The Golfchick Facebook page when you get it.

And thanks, once again to MMOGolf.com for providing the giveaway.

Dear Santa

As most of you know, and some of you probably even care, I’m currently buried under more than a foot of snow, and oppressed with temperatures hovering around 0 degrees f. For my readers across the pond, I have no idea what that means in your crazy Metric system. Yes I know I sound like a closed minded American, and, well… I just don’t understand Metric. This combination of annual events generally leads me to completely forget about my passion for all things golf, as a coping mechanism. This year is no different, however, I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to take some trips, with more planned, to the desert to chase the sun, feel the warmth, and watch that little white golf ball fly in the completely wrong direction as intended. Some people call me crazy to fly 3000 miles round-trip for a weekend of sun and golf, and it pains me to say this, those people are right. But, I’m not crazy by their definition, I’m crazy by the addicted golfer definition. Do what it takes to do what we love.

As I sit here at my computer this Christmas morning, drinking my Bailey’s and coffee, looking out my window over the barren landscape of white and grey, I’m almost feeling prepared to write something inspirational that cures the world of all its ill’s. But, then I remember I’m not capable of that, and even if I were, you wouldn’t be reading a golf blog for that inspiration. Its the holiday season, and this season is supposedly supposed to make us all sit back and reflect on what the prior year has taken and given, how we feel about those events, and what they mean to us. More has happened in the last month than most of us have cared to deal with.

The Mayan calendar supposedly signaled the end of the world for Dec 21, and unless our pre-armageddon lives are eerily similar to our post-apocalypse existence, there’s a whole bunch of Mayan’s laughing and pointing at us from the afterlife. There wasn’t a giant earth-shattering explosion, no asteroid carrying Bruce Willis and the remnants of his world saving space craft plummeted through the atmosphere, and no zombies came out of the ground looking to feed on our soft supple skin. Now, I’ve never been a big believer of zombies, although I did recently see an interview with Joan Rivers and I’m starting to rethink my stance. In the days leading up to Dec 21, I often though to myself (i’ve had a lot of free time on my hands) if the world does end, I hope its some slow but obvious chain of events that allows us to enjoy the end, not just some instant end where no one gets to play the “I told you so” game. If there was a zombie uprising, would you let one into your Saturday morning scratch skins game, knowing that zombie doesn’t have near the flexibility or mental fortitude to make a good golf swing, and risk potential death to take his money? What if he coughed in your backswing? Say something and risk annihilation? Will the undead give you that 6inch putt? What if he takes an illegal drop? Let it go, or make him play a new ball, and risk having your face chewed off? What if Joan Rivers is a sandbagger and you get taken? See what I did there? I got you all imagining how a zombie would look, and then threw Joan Rivers at you. You can’t un-imagine that. If Joan Rivers happens to be reading this, I’m sorry Joan, no harm intended, but you really went overboard with your procedures. Even Dick Clark taught us that no matter how young we continue to look, our bodies will eventually give out. In case the reader didn’t realize, A.D.D. is fun sometimes.

Anyway, a few days before the forecasted apocalypse, a disturbed kid went into an ELEMENTARY school and gunned down 20 kids, 6 teachers, and his mother. If we didn’t believe in the end of the world, that morning we all collectively had a small piece of us that hoped the Mayan’s were right. If that kind of shit was happening, why do we even want to be here? Whats the tie-in to golf here? Nothing. I just wanted to talk about that. The issues surrounding that event are far to complex for my mind to comprehend or even have an opinion about. The world needs to change, and we golfers are supposedly the most honest and caring group of them all. And if we aren’t, we should make that our mission to be known as such. We can change the world with one act of random kindness at a time. Hey, there’s that golf tie in I was looking for! And, in the words of Forrest Gump, that’s all I have to say about that.

As I said, its Christmas morning, and I have some Christmas wishes.

Wish 1 – I want the game of golf to grow, for club rosters to be full, for people to see the value and benefit of the game of golf in their lives.

Wish 2 – I want every single one of you to test yourself in some sort of an individual tournament. Net, Scratch, Matchplay, Strokeplay, whatever. The feeling of knowing there’s no one to bail you out, to know the shot you’re about to hit matters, thats an experience every golfer should know. You’ll appreciate that game more, and no matter what you shoot, how you finish, you’ll be a better player for it.

Wish 3 – I want to turn my negative emotions to positive emotions, and build on them. I can’t change the past, can only control the next shot. And if it doesn’t go where I wanted it to go, chase that ball down and try again.

Wish 4 – Give back. Buy a kid a lesson. Buy a kid a sleeve of golf balls. Give a kid your “lucky” ball if you encounter them on the course. Instead of playing thru that group of 2 kids, join them. And be an adult while you’re at it. If kids see you acting like a jackass on the course, they’ll do the same. Then, watch them play, the enthusiasm they have, encourage their shots, all of them. It will wear off on you, I promise. Basically what I’m saying is be a good example.

Wish 5- Play like a kid. Its a game, its fun, we wouldn’t have started playing it if it wasn’t.

Wish 6- PLAY FASTER!

Wish 7- Buy something from your club. Sure, that shirt, club, dozen balls, glove, or whatever may be a few dollars more expensive than it is at the discount big-box retailer, but your Pro is trying to make a living providing you with a service. Take advantage of that. And while you’re at it, take a lesson.

Wish 8- Get to know someone you’re randomly paired with on the course. Some of my best friends are people I met on the 1st tee of local muni’s.

Wish 9- I want to golf with some of the amazing people I’ve met on Twitter. That sounds crazy, but, one can’t ever have too many friends. (side note – this has already been arranged for a late January round with friends from all over the US, and its going to be a blast).

Wish 10- GO LOW.

Well kids, I’m out of coffee and its now Christmas afternoon. No matter your reason for celebrating, and no matter how you are celebrating, I hope you’re having a good time at it. I’d love to see some of your Christmas wishes. Post them in the comments, or send them to me at Levi@thegolfchick.com. I’m always looking for new things to write about, maybe you’ll give me some inspiration. And, if your wish is for me to stop writing these pointless blog posts, Santa is watching you, knows where you golf, and the next time you hit a shot OB, remember what you wished for!!!

Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me

Sun makes me happy.  Being able to golf year-round is one of the reasons I live in “sunny Southern California.” The ending of Daylight Saving Time every year saddens me. It marks the beginning of the end of twilight golf for the season. I know – people have real problems, and I feel guilty feeling depressed about something so innocuous while people and communities are still trying to survive the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. But this is a golf blog and this is a golf problem. And, hey – people are playing football and gambling on the games and life goes on all around us.

So, I’ll allow myself this annual pout.

While I’m at it, I figured I could add something you may find useful in this time of unimaginable trouble. In case you haven’t seen it already, this nifty tool is  simply called Sunrise Sunset, and gives you that and more for your choice of golf course! It’s pretty handy for personal use or for club pros and golf course web designers. It tells you when the sun rises and sets, gives you local twilight times and other settings you can customize. I love finding such handy info on a course’s website! If you’re looking to find (or set) twilight rates and hours, this is your tool. Right around when the time changes (like today) you might be wondering when it’s going to get dark at your favorite course and whether or not you’ll have time to play after work before the sun goes down. This can help.

The site has specific course information for a massive selection of USA, Canada, and England (I’d be surprised if your favorite course isn’t there), as well as major cities in other countries. You can see in the first image the options you have once you’ve chosen your course. The other image is just a clip of the calendar I created here. Give it a try for yourself and have fun squeezing in rounds if you’re lucky (and smart) enough to live in place that hasn’t been buried in snow yet!

My next (scheduled) pout will occur on December 21st, the shortest – and saddest – day of the year, irrespective of circumstances, of course. You know, that painfully dreary winter solstice right when I’m thinking it’s almost time to start my last minute Christmas shopping. And, as the dreadfully upbeat people like to tell me, that just means every day after that will have more and more daylight. Pththtp!! 😉 Leave me alone. You can’t fix this. That is, unless you can make it so that daylight saving time becomes permanent.  Then I’d love you long time. Day or night.

Happy Valentine’s Day to My True Love

Filed under in case you never saw it, I thought today was a good day to republish this piece I wrote that originally published in Jackson Hole Golfer Magazine: “An Open Love Letter to Golf.”

Jackson Hole Golfer letterMy dearest Golf,

These last four years we have spent together have been amazing. I know we’ve had our ups and downs, but even when we struggle, I remain confident that we’re made for each other. I know you have had people leave you, but no matter how you frustrate me, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to walk away. I watch as your other lovers come and go (and return again) and I want you to know that I fully support and even encourage you to flirt with, seduce, and stimulate as many people as possible. It’s only right that I share what you have to offer with the world, so I will now express the reasons I endeavor to be with you as much as possible

Things I love about you

I love our open relationship. When I’m feeling intimate, I can have you all to myself. I can bring along a trio of friends and you’re always willing. You even introduce me to new and passionate partners I wouldn’t have otherwise met.

I love how you keep challenging me. Every time I’m with you, I learn something new about you. You’re always making me try out new positions and putting me in situations that make me use my equipment in interesting ways. From sandy lies to punch shots to controlled strokes or a full swing, you keep my interest fresh and keen from the first hole to the last every time.

I love the places we go. You have taken me all across the country and beyond, showing me gorgeous locations along the way. I have savored serene landscapes and seascapes I would never have known but for you. Along with our numerous public exhibitions, we have shared moments in romantic settings and private getaways from the mountains to the beaches and everywhere in between. The familiarity and comfort of home will always be there but I know as long as I live you will never run out of new destinations for us to share.

I love the way you keep me coming back for more. With you, I know things will never get stale. We never play a round quite the same way twice. When I have an off day or I’m feeling down about my performance, you always find just the right way to encourage me, from your bad boy act of kicking me while I’m down and making me want to prove something to reminding me just how great a pure shot feels. Each time we’re together, there’s always the opportunity to score better than the last, or even reach a new personal best. No matter how long we’re together or how good I get, that will always be the case. You also know just how to tease me. You penalize me for going out of bounds but I know you secretly enjoy it. The way you taunt me with possibilities is an exhilarating turn-on. After 15 holes of bliss and I feel I’m on the brink of something extraordinary, you throw me off course and make me endure a few extra strokes before I finish, knowing I’ll try that much harder next time. You even indulged my fantasy of holing out with a single stroke. I remember it well. Back when I’d only known you for 6 months, you gave me that thrill not once, but twice in the same week. Some people spend their whole relationship with you without ever having that pleasure. How do you choose who to favor with that luck, you devilish lothario? I feel special to be in such an elite group and no matter what happens we’ll always have that between us.

Dear Golf, thank you for understanding and even promoting obsession rather than seeking a restraining order. You have many more qualities that fuel my passion, but I’ll just leave you with one final thought: I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love your gear.

Forever yours,

Kristen

Skirt Golf Raising Money for Charity – Please Help

Breast cancer awareness and research is a cause that’s close to my heart. Yes, literally. (c: And close to my family. My lovely and brilliant mother is my favorite survivor. Charity events may seem saturated with pink ribbons, but this disease still effects so many women and families and still hasn’t been cured!

Now, a group of guys over in the UK are getting together at Astbury Hall, a Troon Golf facility in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, to don skirts and play 18 holes in the name of this excellent cause this Sunday, April 17th. Jonathan Gidney, a European Tour Pro, is the organizer of this event (and a participant). The guys are great sports and looking forward to playing golf in skirts for this wonderful cause. They banter about on twitter and have great fun. You can follow along there under the hashtag #skirtgolf as they will be live tweeting from the event with pics & vids. Should be good fun, or as Jon says on twitter: #goodtimes. And ladies… did I mention these are some sexy dudes? In addition to the comedy, there should be some nice eye candy while watching them play in skirts! They tee off at 9:20 AM local time. Yep, that’s 1:20 AM Pacific time. I plan to have a nap and get up in the middle of the night to follow along. Who am I kidding? I may not get that nap in.

Here are some of the twitter handles for the players: @JGidney, @millichampios, @DownDaMiddleDan, @nirmski, @barrybethell, @stu1hemming, … You may want to follow them all on twitter in case they forget to include the #skirtgolf hashtag in any of their tweets! Plus, they’re fun to follow anyway. I do from @TheGolfChick of course!

Please contribute to this cause by donating on Jon’s “Just Giving” page here. By the way, Stu Millichamp (@millichampios) is feeling extra generous and has decided to match any donations that are made before the event starts! How awesome is that? So get over there and donate now! (Skirtgolf image from Jonathan Gidney’s Just Giving site.)

If you don’t happen to be on twitter or miss any of the action, I will post a follow-up here with pics, and I’m sure there will be plenty up on the donation page as well and probably a few facebook pages. I’ll let you know!

Again, please contribute and keep spreading the word about breast cancer awareness. May they all roll true!

Update: Here is the “official” music video from the Skirt Golf event. Yes, it’s a custom song. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1-v72h-ZDA

Getting Fitted for my Green Jacket

The long awaited, much hyped new EA Sports game was finally released to the public today: Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12: The Masters. That’s right, we can all now finally play Augusta, at least in the virtual world. The game is available in stores today and if you pre-ordered it, it’ll be on the way. It’s available for X-Box, PlayStation and Wii, which is what I went with.

In order to play Augusta, you have to use a pro avatar or work your way up through the Tour and earn your way there using your own profile. As far as I know, you cannot bring Tour experience from an earlier game version to help get you there. So, since we all want to play the course as soon as we get our hands on the game, we’ll be playing as one of the pros at first, right? I went with Suzann Pettersen. She seems like a cool chick and I have heard great things about her fun personality.

Right away, you’ll notice a few new things besides the course.

As the game is loading, it asks to set up your balance board. I wish I had one – that would make the game even more real! (Update: Twitter friend @ToddLewiSS just told me that board only had a usable width of about 16.5″, so at 5’11”, my stance is a bit wider than that. As he pointed out, it might be fun to use for little chip shots but not for a full swing. I’ll have to think about whether or not I want to invest in this after all.)

Next, you have a caddie! Not just the Tour pros, either. When I create my own avatar (and I will), she will also have a caddie, whose own course knowledge will grow as my own experience progresses. Also, see that tee looking thingy next to my caddie in the pic above? Yep, you can re-position yourself within the teebox for better angles. Pretty cool.

Another tricky thing you may notice is that the wind actually swirls around on some holes! Careful with those shots. You may pick a club and a shot and by the time you swing the wind changed direction. Yeah, just like real golf! Only on the course, you don’t have the handy-dandy wind icon that tells you which direction and how hard it’s blowing. Just a cool little feature, I thought.

So, how did I do? Well, with swing settings on advanced, nice weather, Thursday pins and precision putting selected, here’s how “we” did:

As you can see, I had an eagle, a birdie and two bogies heading at the turn…

But then I made two birdies on Amen Corner alone! Had a three putt bogey in there and a couple good par saves. So what if the scorecard shows you going “out” on both sides? We know what they mean!

So thanks, Suzann, for being so reliable out there. And for having such a great caddy. He gave me a lot of good advice.

I recommend when you play this, you listen to your caddy! I liked figuring out my shots and THEN asking for advice to see if we agreed. Surprisingly, we usually did!

By the way, I do use the Wii Motion Plus on my controller, but that’s not all. I also have a Chicken Stick, which makes it feel much more like playing golf for real. It has a real grip and partial shaft, and the weight of the controller and motion plus in the device just about feels like the weight of an iron.  (You activate the b button by pulling that ring behind the club.) Awesome. You need one of these: Bad Chicken Wii Chick Stick Golf Club

Stay tuned as I will be posting progress reports with my own player and how I progress. Going to start on Tour and earn my way to Augusta this time.

Swag & Prizes for Mesquite Am Golf Chick Participants

As I have mentioned, The Golf Chick is one of the sponsors at this year’s Mesquite Amateur Tournament.  (There is still time to sign up before the early bird deadline – March 31 – and be entered in the drawing to receive a complimentary hotel stay!) By the way, if you already registered and forgot to write “Golf Chick” in the comments, you can still get in on this if you let us know you meant to or otherwise heard about the tournament from The GolfChick.

Last year, all the ladies in the event received a GolfChick divot repair tool and one lucky raffle winner received an Ogio stand bag. Big thanks and shout-out to LeaderPromos.com for providing those items! If any of you noticed my snazzy GolfChick cap – that was also their handiwork.

This year, everyone who signs up using the Golf Chick in their registration entry will receive some special bonus swag items and be automatically entered into some fun side contests that will include prizes for guys, girls & couples. I’m working with some vendors on making up some cool stuff but I’m going to let it be a surprise to you! I am also considering holding an interactive contest that will involve participants’ voting for a winner – so to be ready for that, be sure to follow @TheGolfChick on twitter and on my new facebook page.

We are also looking at setting up a get-together/outing one evening for our group and anyone who wants to join us. There is already so much going on there, this will depend on interest. Feel free to comment here with your thoughts & ideas or email me. I will also be in touch via email to registered participants as plans develop.

This is going to be so much fun. We have a good group started already and I look forward to meeting you all (or seeing you again). I hope to see a bunch more people sign up with us!

If anyone has items they would like to provide for either the swag bag or prize items, please email me at kristen (at) thegolfchick (dot) com to discuss it!

Holiday Golf Gift Idea for Chicks

Looking for something special for the golf chick in your life for Christmas or another holiday? Try this!

It seems like when I’m shopping for golf chicks, it’s difficult to find something beyond the usual array of equipment, clothing and gadgets. It’s rare to come across something truly unique AND useful. Did I mention affordable? That’s right – if you’re one of the lucky ones with a large holiday gift budget, this makes a great stocking stuffer. But if you’re like a lot of people right now and are spending less this year on presents, this makes a great standalone gift!

It’s sparkly, girly, practical and fabulous, and I bet you’d be hard pressed to find a golf chick who wouldn’t enjoy receiving a Putterflys ball marker necklace. Beautiful Swarovski crystals adorn the ball marker to provide the sparkle. The marker is easy to slide off the enhanced magnetic clip (bit stays put when you don’t need it), which hangs from the necklace cord.

Some women don’t like to wear hats when they golf, and find themselves digging in a pocket or fiddling with their gloves to find a ball marker when they need it, so this provides a fashionable and functional solution for them. They come in many different designs and colors (the picture here is only a sampling) so she can get several and always have one that works well with the outfit of the day. The cords are also available in different colors.

Starting at only $21.95, these unique pieces of golf jewelry come in their own pretty little pouches – perfect for a gift! You can also get packages that come with multiple markers & necklaces. And as of now, they offer free standard shipping. How can you beat that?

She’ll look good on and off the course wearing one of these. Sparkly, girly, unique and fabulous? No surprise Christina Kim wears them on the LPGA Tour. I think those words describe her, too.

Remembering September 11 2001

On September 11, 2001, I was not a golfer. I took up golf in late 2004. Now I can’t imagine a better way to spend the anniversary of that day than by playing golf, so I’m glad my golf club is holding its annual Open tournament tomorrow. I will be honoring all Americans – including those who died and their families – by doing what I love best and wishing they could be doing the same.

I wrote the following on September 11, 2002 and, up until now, only shared it with the group of people I happened to be stranded with on that terrible day and my other loved ones. Now I put it out for all.

September 11, 2002

The sun is making its journey to light up the entire country as if it needs to.

One year ago today, something far darker than the absence of light struck our towering beliefs.

As our horror heightened, so did our true spirit. Our heroes emerged, saving thousands of lives, many at the cost of their own. Too many lives were lost, but not a soul.

Our symbols were attacked, our routines suspended. Lives were forever altered by the senseless loss of loved ones. We haven’t yet noticed the births.

Symbols are just symbols. By destroying them, our enemies’ effect was to strengthen our cause. The ideas rooting the symbols were fortified. Their essence, our freedom, was reborn.

We shook in fear as we imagined the terror of the victims and witnessed the horror ourselves. We looked in awe at the bravery of our heroes, yet wept at the sacrifice. We wondered if our own lives were meaningful enough to have been spared.

Energy was released from each heart that stopped that day. Every victim’s last breath would be collectively drawn in by a grieving nation. As it felt like our hearts were broken, our spirit was gathering force.

Eventually, people returned to the business of their lives. For a time, it seemed like just going through the motions. For some, routines sneaked back until it was business as usual. Others charted brand new courses in light of the events that occurred. Despite some appearances, not a single American has forgotten, nor will they ever.

We either honor the lives lost by making our own lives more meaningful, or our own lives are more meaningful because we honor the lives lost. This fact excludes no true American. We will continue to fight the battles to preserve our ideals and prevent future blows, but one strike against us has already won us the war. The very nature of our beliefs determined this inevitable outcome, and always will.

Day or night, this country is lit from within its core, its people.

No Golf Tax in new CA budget

You may have heard that Arnold Schwarzenegger was proposing a tax on golf as part of the new California budget. Apparently, golfers who opposed the tax made themselves heard to the Sacramento lawmakers because when the budget was presented, the golf tax wasn’t part of it. Some people surmised that golfers were targeted for the outdated notion of their affluence across the board, but the state originally contended that golf was marked as an easy thing to tax since the infrastructure for collection was already in place at municipal courses. Though the tax would have reached beyond the munis and dug into the pockets of the wealthier golfers, the impact on lower income players, children’s programs and services that would have suffered from decreased funding due to the tax might have been what changed the politicians’ minds and ultimately caused the tax’s elimination from the budget proposal.

California’s financial position is in definite crisis and the new budget, if passed, will include an increase in sales and income taxes, to name a few. However, I agree with the people who opposed the golf tax as it seemed unfair and would do more harm than good. The California Alliance for Golf may have played a key role in getting lawmakers to see that position. They coordinated the efforts of regional golf leagues and agencies like the SCGA and NCGA to get word out to members to make their voices heard. Personally, I know the SCGA did a really good job communicating the issue and keeping us informed on the situation, and I want to thank them and every member who made the effort to get this tax off the proposed budget.
